An important part of the board secretary's role is as a bridge between management and the board to assist in the delivery of the organisations strategic objectives. To enable them to fulfill this role it is critical for the board secretary to have an excellent working relationship with the chair, CEO, members of the board and the senior management team to create a strong, positive, and effective decision-making process within the organisation that facilitates the success of an organisation.

Board secretaries should use their 'influence' to align the interests of the different parties around the board table, facilitate dialogue, gather and assimilate relevant information and enable effective decision-making.

This online tutoiral will explore how board secretaries can build or improve their relationships with the chair, CEO, members of the board and the senior management team providing practical tips on how to manage these often complex relationships.

Key topics to be discussed include:

  • Creating and managing relationships with the chair, CEO, executive team, and executive assistants.
  • Promoting a culture of openness and debate (particularly by facilitating the contributions of non-executive directors).
  • Facilitating communication and information flows between board members, the board and management, the chairman and the chief executive officer, the company and its shareholders, and the company and its stakeholders
